Around this time of year our patients ask us about our opinions on getting the flu shots. Although we do not force our opinions on them, we have gone to extensive lengths to review the effectiveness of getting them. Surprisingly, we have found that the medical community seems divided about the benefits of taking the flu shots. In fact there are so many strains of the flu (aka influenza) virus that many times the virus mutates so quickly that even the flu experts admit they cannot predict what strains will predominate in any season.
Here are some interesting findings from other sources and experts that have researched the subject:
-Studies from the Center of Disease Control show that the flu vaccine may fail up to 84% of the time (Robert Rowen, M.D.)
-Although immunization rates in people over 65 have increased 50% in the past 20 years, there has not been a corresponding decline in flu-related deaths (USA Today 2/15/05)
-Studies show that if an individual had five consecutive flu shots, their chances of getting Alzheimers disease was ten times greater than if they had one, two or no shots (Hugh Fudenburg MD, world renowned immunogeneticist).
The CHOICE on taking the flu shot is a CHOICE we all have to make and the individuals CHOICE should be based on facts, not fear. We mentioned several preventative measures that can be taken to prevent the holiday flu in last week’s health tip. Please call us to find out more information. Happy Holidays!?
