Four Tips for Growing an Organic Garden

Growing an Organic GardenHave you given thought to organic foods as a strategy to implement better nutrition into your life? Into your loved ones lives? At Integrative Healing Dynamics, we value the importance of eating organic foods and often recommend it to our patients. We realize as the price of food continues to grow, that organic produce may be beyond some people’s budgets, however, what about growing a garden? There are urban gardens popping up all over and they can be considerably cost effective as well as therapy for what ails you or an experience shared with someone else. The fun part is you get to harvest what you sow and eat the fruits of your labors. If you’re ready to dig in, here are some useful tips we’ve come across to help you build an organic garden of wellness.

Tip 1. Test the soil: When you plant outdoors, you never really know what is in the soil. It could have washed in from somewhere and picked up potentially dangerous chemicals that could be hazardous to your health. It’s always a good idea to have your soil tested before planting your garden. Remember, “garbage in and garbage out”? You want only the good stuff going into your organic garden. If your garden is too big for large pots in which you can have better control over the soil, many universities with agricultural programs offer opportunities to test your soil at a low cost.

Tip 2. Turn to plant friendly bugs: The organic method for clearing your garden of harmful pests includes ladybugs and lacewings. Most garden supply stores will stock a variety of larvae of these garden friendly bugs. Green lacewings are not vegetarians. They eat the eggs of harmful insects and leave your garden alone. And did you know that cute little ladybugs love aphids? Just release a swarm of them in your garden and let them go to work!

Tip 3. Consider building a natural medicine cabinet right in your backyard: In Southern California we are blessed to be able to grow fruits and vegetables in our yards almost year round. Did you know that you could also grow many different types of medicinal herbs right in your own backyard? Spearmint and ginger even dill help ease the stomach, as well as nausea and motion sickness. Herbalists say that rosemary will boost memory and garlic has long been known as an antifungal agent and natural antibiotic. Ongoing research indicates that photochemical present in herbs help in preventing cancer and heart disease.

Tip 4. Make your own compost pile: Compost is natural fertilizer made from leaves, leftover vegetables, fruit peels, coffee grounds and even egg shells. By recycling your leftovers, you can create a natural organic fertilizer to give your plants the nutrition the need to create the best garden for you. Take care when building your compost and use containers found at your local garden supply store that are specially built for composting.

As holistic health care specialists we emphasize preventative health practices and encourage the importantance of a natural lifestyle. It can’t get any more natural, organic or holistic than gardening and communing with nature. Bon appétit!
