Proper rest is probably one of the best things you can do to regenerate yourself for the challenges of the upcoming day. If you are not able to fall asleep, wake up too often, don’t feel well-rested when you wake up in the morning, or simply want to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep, try as many of the following techniques below as possible:
• Our current favorite for insomnia is Neuro-emotional Technique (NET). This technique can help balance your body’s bioenergy system and resolve some of the emotional stresses patterns that are contributing to the insomnia at a very deep level. The results are typically long lasting and the improvement is remarkably rapid.
• Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars. These snacks will typically cause an insulin spike that will lower the blood sugar dramatically and make a person tired. Although you may fall asleep, the blood sugar levels can rebound with a vengeance, causing a person to wake up a short time later and not be able to fall back asleep.
• Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the bedroom it can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland’s production of melatonin and seratonin. Also, if you have to use the bathroom at night try and keep the light off so the pineal function is not interrupted.
• Avoid alcohol. Although alcohol will make people drowsy, the effect is short lived and people will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol will also keep you from falling into the deeper stages of sleep, where the body does most of its healing.
• Lose weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of sleep apnea, which will prevent a restful night’s sleep.
• Start using essential oils before bed time. We have had great success helping patients with insomnia and restless sleep. Through our research, we have found that certain combinations of essential oils can be very therapeutic in helping a persons body calm down to receive a more restful sleep.
