From the birthing process to the moment they start walking and exploring their surroundings, children’s tiny spines undergo a tremendous amount of stress.
It starts with the birthing process. Even a natural childbirth without the use of pitocin, no epidural and a vaginal delivery can be a lot of physical stress for a small and developing spine. If your baby was delivered with forceps or vacuum extraction, there is an additional stress that can lead to spinal trauma. If you had a c-section, the extra chemical and physical stress on the infant from the drugs that are passed through the mother to the baby can hinder the neurological development of the child.
Additionally, improper lifting of a baby out of a car seat or during diaper changing can lead to minor spinal traumas that affect the nervous system.
Many health conscious parents want the best for their children and will bring their infants to a chiropractor to have their spines checked as soon as possible to ensure that their spines and nervous systems are healthy. Other common health issues that cause parents to bring their babies to a chiropractor may be:
- Colic
- Unexplained crying
- Poor appetite
- Earaches or ear infections
- Colds
- Allergic reactions
Children between the ages 0-5 years old represent the largest window of opportunity for chiropractors to correct spinal misalignments and restore normal function of the nervous system. These non-forceful interventions can have a dynamic impact on the future development of a child’s life. A spine free from misalignment optimizes the nervous system and can prevent future health issues such as scoliosis, hyperactivity, bedwetting or even asthma.
