With the roar of the 2007 San Diego fires slowly coming to a close, it has many of us thinking about how the fires became so out of control in the first place. You would have figured that we learned valuable lessons from our experience with the Cedar fires back in 2003; and we would be wrong to assume that we learned nothing.
The community of San Diego really came together to support each other with volunteers willing to assist in whatever way possible. The reverse 911 calls and continuous around the clock coverage were also great to ensure that people were safely evacuated from their homes. With only 14 casualties, it is a near miracle that
San Diego survived the way that it has. However, let us not forget that the accumulated damage from the thousands of acres burned which will cost San Diego County alone a total of at least $1 billion.Hundreds of homes were lost in the fires which will force many families months and even years of hard times. So you might be asking how these events relate to our health?Well, if you think about it, the situations are very relatable.Although San Diego did a great job at caring for a problem when there was an emergency, there were preventionary measures that could have been taken before the fire got out of control (implementing efforts of controlled burning comes to mind).Like our bodies, we need to make the best investments and energies toward preventing problems before our health gets out of hand. Many times, the cost of caring for an illness (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic pain) far exceeds what it would have cost in preventing it.Signs like obesity, low energy and decreased performance are signs that prevention measurements need to be taken.Whether it be starting an exercise program, choosing healthier foods, giving time to yourself or starting a chiropractic wellness program, the investment we make to ensure better health will pay us back over the long run.
P.S.:With a new baby coming into our IHD family, we have further dedicated our efforts into a more grounded understanding of the things we can do to help raise a smarter and healthier child. If you would like to know more about the information we’ve learned, RSVP to our next workshop on “How to Raise a Smart and Healthy Child” on Saturday, December 1st from 10:00AM-11:30AM.For more information on this event, call our office at 858-558-0057 or RSVP on line at www.IntegrativeHealingDynamics.com.
