Historically, chiropractic has been known in helping to alleviate most all cases of low back pain (LBP). Did you know that up to 85% of adults endure LBP at some time in their lives? Oftentimes a medical approach will rely on medication for LBP patients in order to alleviate the symptoms. However, many of the medications used to relieve LBP carry hazardous side effects. Why is a drugless approach like chiropractic so much more effective than the medical approach? Here are a couple of reasons.
Causal care vs. Symptom relief: Chiropractors are constantly looking to what is causing a person’s health problem rather than suppressing body symptoms. In cases of LBP, the pain is a symptom that naturally occurs to tell you that something is wrong. Oftentimes, the medical model of healthcare will remove the pain signals through muscle relaxants. This only gives temporary relief and comes with an array of side effects (drowsiness, addiction, dry mouth, urinary problems). Instead of focusing on pain relief, Chiropractors focus on what is actually causing of the pain. Tiny misalignments in the spine called vertebral subluxations can often cause pressure on nerves and disrupt the nerve signals coming out from the lower back. This can lead to the discomfort and LBP that people experience. By removing the nerve pressure through chiropractic adjustments, it allows the nerve messages to flow better, relieve symptoms of LBP, and offers more lasting results.
The COACH approach: Medical paitents are far more likely to resort to bed rest, which is proven ineffective for LBP (J of Manipulative Physiol Ther 2001; 24: 543-51). Chiropractors take the time to coach their patients through all natural approaches to pain reduction. Areas such as exercise, nutrition and self care education are foundational principles to achieving better health and lasting pain relief.
