The original founder of Applied Kinesiology, George J. Goodheart, burned brightly until the end, then left us peacefully on March 5, 2008 at the young age of 89. A practicing chiropractor, Dr. Goodheart discovered and developed Applied Kinesiology, which is used today by chiropractors and others the world over to test muscle reactions and diagnose patients. His passing comes as a great sadness to us and we wanted to take a moment to honor this great man.
The contributions of George Goodheart, D.C. have been significant to the world of healing and chiropractic. Dr. George Goodheart, an exceptional holistic pioneer, laid open the path for innovations that will take years to explore before they are fully understood. As we continue to learn more about the expanding universe of chiropractic and how it blends so well with other forms of holistic healing, it is fitting to recognize the innovators such as Dr. George Goodheart who has contributed so much to chiropractic development.
One of the most revolutionary original thoughts in chiropractic history that eventually lead to the development of other healing arts in chiropractic and beyond was Dr. Goodheart’s discovery of Applied Kinesiology. Dr. Goodheart made the original observations that weak muscles in a patient’s body could be used as a diagnostic tool to give the Doctor a perspective on a person’s health. He discovered that weak muscles could provide an indication of whether these different healing interventions were necessary and best suited for that particular patient.
From this, Dr. Goodheart was among the first to notice correlations between the spine and other parts of the body like the nervous, circulatory, immune systems as well as acupuncture, nutrition and cranial adjustment; some of which there was little known about at the time.
Because of his exceptional discoveries, Dr. Goodheart became one of the first chiropractors to work with other healing arts and give lectures. He served as the first DC (doctor of chiropractic) at the Olympics in 1980, and was featured in 2001 by Time Magazine in an article entitled “Alternative Medical Innovators, A New Breed of Healers.”
Dr. Goodheart brought a passionate curiosity and an integrative genius to his work and although his work lives on, he will be greatly missed. Dr. George Joseph Goodheart, Jr., dead at 89, was a true master and will be reveled for his chiropractic work for years to come.
