Let’s start with the premise that each individual is whole, resourceful and creative. That’s right. You don’t need to be fixed. You are a diamond with a few facets which need to be polished. And you have the ability to make a new choice in every breath you take, a choice to break your old patterns and polish the “you” diamond so you shine beautifully.
If you really believed that, what unhealthy patterns would you change to live a more healthy lifestyle? We are not talking about creating a new habit by practicing it for 28 days but to determine the belief structure which underlies your current unhealthy behaviors so you can do something about it – for real this time!
So what do you believe? Have you ever really thought about it? Gayle Gregory, one of the authors of The Grand Experiment says we often buy into seven myths or unwholesome beliefs that thwart our personal growth and contribute to our unhealthy thinking. She says we believe:
- The world is a scary place - so we need to constantly protect ourselves.
- There is not enough - so we better grab what we can now.
- The power is outside of me - thus I am a victim.
- I am not enough – so I better fake it real good!
- There is only one right way - and I hope I know what it is.
- I know what is real – so I don’t have to listen to others’ realities.
- We are separate – so I don’t really matter anyway.
Which unwholesome belief do you most resonate with? While more than one may apply to you, choose the one that stops you cold. Spend a few minutes thinking about how that myth impacts the choices you make every day. By looking closely into this context, you can begin to see how the myth drives your decisions. And you can choose to debunk that personal myth and live a life of freedom from your own personal oppression.
Ask three magic questions:
- What will it take for me not to allow this to drive me?
- How can I fully engage myself in more healthy thinking that supports me?
- How can I make this new choice fun, fulfilling and joyful?
While working on one’s self is not easy, it is rewarding to be able to make better decisions that support your true purpose here. Yes, this is the tip of the iceberg. And it’s a way to start thinking healthy!
