Valentine’s Day often reminds me of the value in relationships. An emotional instigator of stress can be caused by the lack of quality relationships. Over time lack of companionship can affect the mind as well as the body. Evidence continues to surface surrounding the impact of relationships and the lack of relationships on our health.
Research shows how lower incidences of heart disease can be directly contributed to loving relationships. A three year study in Toronto, Canada focused on 103 married individuals with mild hypertension. Those individuals reporting marital satisfaction had a lower risk of heart disease (J Psychosom Res, 2003; 55:229-33). In fact, lack of social connections has been shown to accelerate cognitive decline over time. A study at the University of Montreal, Quebec Canada tracked a group of people over age 65 over a four year period. The study among community-dwelling elderly persons showed that those with few social ties, poor social integration and disengagement showed higher risk factors for cognitive decline (J Gerontol B Psychol Sci Soc Sci 2003; 58:S93-S100).
A holistic Chiropractic lifestyle emphasizes the importance of balance in all aspects of life. This week, try and find your balance in relationships by trying one or more of these social activities:
- Participating in community events that you enjoy
- Taking a college extension class or
- Volunteering for an organization you support.
You will be surprised what a difference cultivating quality relationships can make in your life!
