IHD’S DRUG WATCH : ZOCOR (Simvastatin)

Tag: Drugs
Aug 7th, 2007

drug watch: Zocor (Simvastatin)Description & Indication:  Zocor is a lipid lowering agent that is classified as a prescription in a group of drugs called statins.  This medication is used as a prevention to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular events that can occur when diagnosed with disorders like diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and strokes. When blood tests show high cholesterol markers (Ex. Total cholesterol, LDL) statin drugs like Zocor help control these levels as an addition to adequate dieting.

Contraindications & Precautions:  Zocor has been shown to cause pathology in the muscle due to the physiologic effects it has on the body (Hey.  Isn’t the heart a muscle?).  Its effects can manifest as muscle pain, tenderness and even weakness.  Studies indicate that these symptoms are more likely to occur when doses of Zocor exceeds a daily dose of 10 mg and given in conjunction with other medications.  Also, in cases of excess alcohol use or past/present history of liver disease, Zocor should be contraindicated.  In fact, studies have shown that a significantly high dose of this Zocor given to rats significantly increased their risk of developing liver carcinoma.  Safety of using Zocor in pregnant women has also not been established.  If a woman is pregnant and being treated with Zocor, it should be discontinued immediately.

Some Useful Advise:  All known precautions should be taken to prevent adverse reactions to these medications.  The doctor should perform a thorough review of the patient’s history to rule out possible drug interactions.  The patient also has the right to ask about potential risk, side effects and alternatives to taking any medications.

Closing Comments:  In today’s fast paced society, we are constantly medicating ourselves and our children without full knowledge of the impact these medications play on our lives.  At IHD, we feel a responsibility to enlighten people to make empowering decisions on their health care.  You owe it to yourself and your family to remain up to date on these controversial medications and discuss the reasoning risk and benefits of the medications with your physician.  Alternative methods/therapies should also be considered before making these critical decisions about your health.
