I recently attended a seminar that was well represented by world-class leaders in the Chiropractic profession and had the unique privilege of listening to Dr. Patrick Gentempo (founder and CEO of the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance) as he eloquently expressed his perspectives on our current chiropractic wellness model.
Dr. Gentempo talked about how often the term “wellness” is loosely used leaving people confused about what wellness really means. Some medical definitions define “wellness” as a lack of symptoms or disease. As Chiropractors, we know from experience that a lack of symptoms does not indicate that someone is healthy. We have seen this expressed many times over in people who rarely show symptoms of diabetes or cancer and yet the disease exists in their bodies.
Shouldn’t “wellness” really start with prevention? Dr. Gentempo defines wellness as the “degree to which an individual experiences health and vitality in all aspects of life”. This definition implies that true wellness goes beyond the antiquated model of disease care and pain and hits at the heart of what wellness really is with prevention.
Founded on principles of full health expression it goes well beyond masking symptoms with drugs. Complications such as negative stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise and even environmental pollutants can obstruct health and cause disease to happen.
Although “wellness” has different meanings for different aspects of the body and in our lives today it is impossible to eliminate stressors completely, “wellness” as defined by Chiropractic encompasses the importance of maintaining good spinal structure to ensure proper communication between the nerves and the rest of the body.
When the nerve signals are weakened by pressure on the nerves, vertebral subluxations or spinal misalignments can occur. A Chiropractor’s primary goal is maintaining the integrity of the spine to keep this complex nerve system pressure free and happy.
You too can to experience the benefits of true wellness with properly administered chiropractic care, holistic lifestyle recommendations and wellness education.
