Winning on Wellness Can Add Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years

Wellness Adds Years to Your LifeIn case you haven’t heard already, living the wellness lifestyle is your best bet at preventing disease and increasing your healthy years as you age.  If you look around, media figures like: Dr. Phil, Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Andrew Weil, and a number of others have their own spin on living wellness.  We think it’s great to hear these public giants talk about pressing issues like health care, heart disease and healthy thinking, especially considering that the pharmaceutical industry works with a 1.9 billion dollar budget to promote healthy living through better drugs.  The message of wellness has been around for years and to give you an idea of the impact of living wellness, consider these interesting finding found in an early edition of Forbes Magazine back in November 2004.

-If you quit smoking by age 40, you can add 9 years to your life; stop by 50 and can buy 6 years.  Even walking briskly for 3 hours a week adds six years to your life if you start at age 45.

-Studies show that heart patients on a Mediterranean diet reduce their risk of future heart attacks and cardiac deaths by up to 70%.  Cholesterol lowering drugs only lower the risk of heart disease by 35% and cost a lot more.

-Making some fairly radical changes in your diet can reduce cholesterol up to 30% in only 4 short weeks, a University of Toronto study found.  Their lab studies showed that implementing: soluble fiber (helps the body process cholesterol containing bile), almonds and  so called plant sterols found in plant oils (inhibit cholesterol absorption from the gut), and cutting out the meats from your diet can reduce their bad cholesterol in 4 short weeks just as much as a control group on Merck’s Mevacor.

Living wellness can have huge impacts on your life and those you care about.  Although the journey may be tedious at times, the investment and benefits will come back to reward you many times over.
