Today there are over 5,000,000 children being treated for ADHD with Ritalin. This is an over 500% increase since the 1990’s. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a common condition that many parents are facing today. While Ritalin may seem to control some of the difficult behaviors, a preliminary study done in March 2005 showed its use increased a person’s risk of cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings, but why not look at natural ways to help out your children without any side effects.
As a parent it is crucial that you are aware of your choices; ADHD is not a life sentence. Many chiropractors work with children with ADHD and parents report that they have significant improvements. In addition, here are some dietary recommendations that chiropractors, pediatricians and many other healthcare professionals agree can help your child improve their symptoms:
-
No soft drinks – these chemical concoctions contain artificial food coloring, additives and preservatives
-
Limit dairy and bleached or processed flour – these items are taxing to your child’s immunity
-
Avoid fast food – the only healthy option is to avoid it all together, but if this isn’t possible, then limit it to once a month
-
Eat at least four servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit every day – fruit is an important part of your child’s diet but fresh vegetables contain more of the vitamins and minerals that your child needs
-
Eat whole grains and protein-rich foods – a diet that is high in protein and healthy carbohydrates will give your child the energy they need without over-working and over-loading their bodies
-
Eat all-natural as much as possible – avoid foods that have been treated, processes, packaged, colored, flavored or pasteurized
There are always more natural alternatives to helping your children overcome life’s challenges. In combination with diet, many parents report back a vast improvement in their child’s ADHD symptoms in conjunction with chiropractic care. Although there might not be a cure, improving your child’s quality of life is possible.
