At IHD we constantly encounter patients who want to make a change in their health situations, but have not been proactive in doing the things necessary to make long lasting changes. Author Portia Nelson wrote a book entitled There’s A Hole In My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self Discovery that talks about patterns people develop that hold back their ability to grow into the people they wish to become. In the book there is a famous poem called “Autobiography In Five Short Chapters.” Think about your life (particularly in the areas of health/wellness) and see how these short chapters resonate with you.
| Chapter I I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk I fall in. I am lost … I am helpless. It isn’t my fault. It takes me forever to find a way out.
Chapter II I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again.I can’t believe I am in the same place but, it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. |
Chapter III I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in … it’s a habit. my eyes are openI know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately. Chapter IV I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. Chapter V I walk down another street. |
At IHD, we stand behind the saying that “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten!” This means that change in any form is created by a willingness to change old habit patterns. We find that people become consistently stuck in their “stuff” when they refuse to acknowledge the underlying cause of their problems. When it comes to a person’s health, changes like: getting chiropractic care, starting an exercise routine, confronting adversity, or reducing stress are each options that may be inconvenient and even uncomfortable at times. However, we must always remember that in order for things to change, the change must come from us first.
P.S.: If you are ready to make a change in different areas of your health and well-being, then RSVP for some of the many great seminars and fun activities we have planned for the community during the month of September. The Doctors at IHD have teamed up with other wellness professionals (life coach, meditation and yoga instruction, and even a professional chef) to participate in a national campaign called Discover Wellness Month throughout September. The aim of this campaign is to help people to reduce their healthcare cost through effective tools and strategies towards living a higher quality of life. Check out a description of the events we have planned and see which events you would like to attend. You can reserve a seat at any of these events by registering or calling our office at 858-558-0057 for questions and details.
