Although many people and parents use over the counter drugs like Benedryl to help find relief from a runny nose, sneezing or nasal congestion, they should always attempt to become aware of the consequences that occur with using this class of medications. To find out more read on…
Drugs like Benedryl are in a class known as anti-histamines. Most of the American public is aware that allergic reactions can lead to excess histamines in the body. However, did you know that histamines are actually like brain food that keeps the brain active? When we take an anti-histamine like Benedryl, it will decrease the amount of histamines in the body, but also have a depressing effect on the central nervous system (i.e. that’s why you and your kids feel tired after taking it). Ask yourself if relieving the sniffles is worth sacrificing you or your child’s attention at work and school. On top of that, other possible side effects of the drug can include: diminished alertness, disturbed coordination, blurred vision, convulsions, and even seizures. Although this is only a partial list, the message should be clear (READ THE LABELS!!!).
At IHD, we feel that dependency on medications is ill advised. Our aim has always been towards helping the body to achieve a state of health where medications are not necessary. In our opinion, using medications and exchanging one symptom for another is not always the best alternative. Give us a call if you would like to review potential alternatives to using medications. As always, the choice is yours.
P.S.: If you are interested in knowing about effective concepts to help you evaluate when to seek medical advice, we still have a few spots left for our special health care presentation, Medicines or Drugs: Are They Saving Your Life or Killing You? (What your Medical Doctor May Not Have Told You) on July 28th, 2007 at 10AM. To find out more or to register for the workshop call the office or register online.
